MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men’s Basketball team held the nation’s leading scorer to a season low as the balanced attack by the Hawks led to an 88-73 victory over Shaw in CIAA action on Thursday evening.

The Hawks produced a season-high six players in double-figures. Demetrius Sanders led the balanced attack with 19 points. Timothy Bing scored 17 points with five assists, four steals and four rebounds. Gus Rowland tallied 16 points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Brandon Mayhan scored a season-high 15 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. Michael Kelly rounded out the double-figuring scoring with 12 points.
Deon Joyner posted nine points off the bench. The Hawks tallied a season-high 20 assists on 29 made baskets.
Chowan’s defense forced Shaw to commit 23 turnovers and held the nation’s leading scorer, Amir Hinton, to 17 points in 37 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
After an early bucket by Shaw, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run with Brandon Mayhan knocking down a pair of triples to spark the rally.
Deon Joyner posted a layup before Demetrius Sanders got on the board with a dunk. Michael Kelly posted a layup and Gus Rowland knocked down a triple to double up the Bears, 20-10.
Brandon Mayhan tallied a jumper and Michael Kelly connected from the stripe along with a layup by Gus Rowland kept the scoring moving for the Hawks.
The Bears closed the gap to three, 29-26, but Demetrius Sanders tallied his third dunk of the half to swing the momentum back to the Hawks.
Another triple by Brandon Mayhan and an old-fashioned three-point play by Timothy Bing pushed the lead to nine, 37-28, with just over five minutes to play in the opening half.
Gus Rowland knocked down a three-pointer to give the Hawks a double-digit lead, 40-29, to spark a 7-0 run.
Shaw would fight back to close the gap to 46-39 to end the opening half.
Second Half:
Shaw continued the fight out of the intermission to trim the deficit to 46-43. Gus Rowland ended the spurt with a triple before Timothy Bing connected from the floor. Rowland knocked down another triple to stretch the lead to 54-45.
Deon Joyner traded a bucket with the Bears before an 8-0 run by Shaw pulled the Bears to within one, 56-55, with 13:14 to play.
After trading three-pointers, Chowan went on a 20-3 run to grab hold of the contest. Back-to-back buckets by Demetrius Sanders started the run. Timothy Bing converted another three-point play and connected from deep to push the lead back to double-figures, 70-58. Michael Kelly capped off the run with a layup.
Demetrius Sanders hit a corner trey to counter the Shaw triple. Michael Kelly continued the scoring on a tip-in off a missed free throw.
Deon Joyner and Demetrius Sanders would convert from the floor to finish off the contest.
